RE: Feeling safe camping in a fifth wheel

Security was a concern for me too when I chose a 5th wheel. I have my cell phone right by the bed - I should keep the truck keys there too I suppose so I could set off the truck alarm but I don't remember to do that very often. I know if you're boondocking in a motorhome you could easily drive away from a scary situation and that's not posible in a 5th wheel but do you plan to do that ? Boondock that is .... I think I may stay in a Walmart lot once in awhile but it's not something I'm going to do often. I think when I do boondock, I'll have the address of where I am, my cell phone close and I'll dial 911 if anything scary happens. With the correct address of my location I'd hope the police could arrive quickly. I do travel with a dog and a crazy cat - if someone came into the 5er the dog would bark and probably bite and the "bad guy" would more then likely trip over the cat. I've never felt unsafe in a campground - I always program the office number into my cell so I can call them ASAP with any problems Good luck with your decision - just think of how you'll be using it and do what makes you feel safe.

RE: Retirees - Decision to Retire

I decided to retire after my Mom died from cancer, 2 mths later my Father died in an accident, about 4 months after that my Aunt was diagnosed with lung cancer and then my sister was diagnosed with cervical cancer - my sister is OK, my aunt now has a couple of months left to live. I want to live and explore and enjoy my life - I couldn't do that at my job. My job was a soul sucking hell hole - it paid well but that's the only good thing about it. I did get some money when my Father died, enough to pay off my bills and make a down payment on a 5th wheel/truck combo. I'll have to workamp to make ends meet but I'll be living, not just existing. Money is not everything - you need it to get by, but living your life and being happy is much more important to me. Don't let money be the only consideration in your decision - Good luck

RE: Misquito repellent or remedy?

Do you use full strength Listerine or dilute it ? Do you just put it in a spray bottle ? I'd love a non chemical way to keep the skeeters away - I'm in Iowa too !!

RE: Tying out vs. containing dog

Here's what I do - it's not perfect but it works for me. Molly (my dog) has a metal kennel for inside ... I just take it outside when I want her out but contained (when I'm grilling or have a open fire going) I also used that system when I'm setting up the 5er - she's safe and out of the way and isn't in the truck whinning to get out and stressing me out. I was going to get an Ex Pen but for now I don't want to haul it around. I may change my mind later.

RE: Full timing/ workcamping/ retired planning ahead?

If you aren't "good" with money/investing - get a money manager now. Keep your debt down so when you're ready to go you are debt free. I wish I had saved alot more money (of course if the company CEO hadn't robbed our company blind I'd have about 100K more then I do) Diversify your investments !!! If I hadn't had all my money in my company 401K I'd have alot more money right now. Like others have said - enjoy today !! Get a RV and travel - enjoy - live - love - laugh - blah blah blah :B

RE: New kitten along RV'g

I'm also going to be traveling with my cat and am planning on using some sort of crate/container type thing. I'm just wondering if those of you that do travel wtih cats have a litter box in their travel crate ? If not, do you stop along the way and let them potty ? How does that work ? I don't want him "holding it" since male cats are prone to urinary blockages. Thanks

RE: Indoor Pet Restroom

When I moved to my apartment I tried to train Molly to "go" in/on the "Patio Potty" - it's a box with little under fake grass. She wouldn't use it - I then tried the potty pads - she wouldn't use them. Guess I did too good of a job potty training her ! It's a big pain on a cold or rainy day but, I have to take her out. Guess I'd be sure your doggies would use potty pads before investing in anything expensive.

RE: should i??

Can't wait to hear how this turns out ! Just a word of caution - don't have her breed listed as a pit bull mix on any papers or you'll have trouble getting into campground - lots of CG's have a ban on pit bulls. Several years ago I adopted a Chow Mix from a shelter and made sure the Vet listed her as a sheppard mix, Chows are banned lots of places too. Good Luck !!!

RE: Extreme Makover 5er Style!

This may be a silly question, but do you just use regular old paint ? Did you need to prime the walls with anything ? That looks awesome !! I definetly will want to paint the inside of my new home and probably remove the valances so I loved seeing your pics !!! Thanks

RE: pets

Not sure how big of a crate you'll need but I plan to either put Molly's under the desk where the chair would go, or take away two chairs at the table and put her crate between the table leg and the wall (or couch depending on floorplan) You sure could take the table out if table trays work for you - I couldn't tell you the last time I sat at the table and ate, it's always a tray for me - I do want the table for company and for crafting though. Take some measurements inside and see where the crate will fit the best in your rig ! Good luck and happy travels
